WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
We’ll kick off this two-day workshop using black India ink—big gestures, tiny scribbles, drips, splats… whatever feels just right to you. Those first marks become your background structure for the composition. From there, you’ll layer on more marks, giving the work more energy until the composition feels just right.
Then we move to the hotbox, where things really start to evolve. Using only two encaustic colors, you’ll pull encaustic monotypes that create astonishing elements—quirky textures, bold contrasts and unexpected softness. The limited palette becomes a creative dare, nudging you to stretch your style, trust your instincts, and discover new magic in your mark-making.
What you’ll learn:
- How to loosen up and make fearless, expressive ink marks
- Fresh ways to riff on your own visual language
- Hotbox basics for creating complex, layered works
- Tricks for getting depth and drama from usng just two colors
- How limitations can spark freedom, flow and “wait-did I make that?” moments
- Best materials and tools to use
- Combing opaque and transparent colors
- Color mixing
- R&F oil sticks
- Bonus! How to make encaustic medium and gesso
